After being away from football for more than a decade, I recently decided to return to the sport. This decision was both exhilarating and humbling. I quickly realized that the game I remembered was quite different from the reality I faced on the field.
In this brief post, I want to share my struggles and outline my plan to improve my game to what I call an “Acceptable level”.
Short-Term Goals
When I mention reaching an “acceptable level,” I am referring to a point where my teammates feel comfortable passing the ball to me. Right now, I can sense their hesitation. They might think I will lose possession to the opposing team in just a few seconds. Honestly, I do lose the ball easily at times. :D
For me, an acceptable level of play means my teammates can trust my ability to handle the ball. They should know they can rely on me during crucial moments of the game.
To achieve this, I have set some short-term goals:
- Improve Ball Control
- Enhance Passing Skills
- Develop Fitness Levels
The Ball
One thing that surprised me during my first game was the ball itself. I don’t remember it feeling so hard. It felt almost like a handball! This might be because I used to play with much softer, cheaper balls in my childhood.
The difference in feel made it challenging to control the ball at first. I realized that I had to adjust my touch and technique to accommodate the harder surface.
Coordination with Teammates
I had forgotten how important teamwork is in football. The game isn’t just about individual skills; understanding your teammates and coordinating with them is vital. In my first game back, I struggled with positioning and communication.
Many times, I found myself out of sync with the flow of the game. I was often unsure of when to make a run or when to hold back.
The Concept of Defending
Defending is another aspect I need to relearn. Initially, I found myself caught out of position. I was trying to chase the ball instead of maintaining my defensive shape. Timing and communication are critical elements that I must focus on to be effective on the field.
Looking Ahead
Returning to football has been a rewarding experience, despite the challenges. Each time I step on the field, I’m reminded of the joy the sport brings me. I’m excited to put in the necessary work and watch myself grow as a player. My hope is to improve my individual skills and become a more integral part of my team’s dynamics.
I’ll document my progress and share the lessons I learn along the way. :D
